Mauritius has relaxed its travel ban on South Africa as fears over the Omicron variant's spread subside. The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) announced that the Covid-19 travel ban placed by Mauritius on South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe will be lifted on January 7, 2022.
“We are delighted that South Africans can now visit Mauritius. Our patience has been rewarded by the Covid-19, which has put considerable pressure on all nations to do the right thing,” said MTPA director Arvind Bundhun.
Bundhun stated that the Mauritian health officials are prioritising the delivery of booster doses for people who have already been twice vaccinated. It is also vaccinating those aged 15 to 18.
"The health officials are confident in their abilities to manage the current surge in infection rates," he said.
“Sanitary measures in the Mauritius hospitality business remain at the highest levels, offering optimal virus protection for the local populace and international guests. Booking a holiday to Mauritius gives visitors confidence in a fun, safe, and secure trip,” added Arvind.
This follows similar moves by the EU and the US.
