Following the "vandalism" of one of the city's sewage pump stations, "unacceptable" levels of E-coli bacteria were identified in seawater, prompting the eThekwini municipality to block six of Durban's beaches with immediate effect.
The following beaches will be closed until further notice, according to the municipality, for public safety reasons:
• South Beach is a popular tourist destination.
• North Beach is a great place to visit.
• Beach in Bay of Plenty
• Country Club Beach • Sun Coast Beach
• Beaches in Umgeni
"The levels of germs have been exacerbated by ongoing vandalism of one of the city's sewage pump stations, as well as unusually strong rains that are washing garbage from a number of informal settlements down the uMngeni River," said Msawakhe Mayisela, a city spokesperson.
