Despite requests for Cristiano Ronaldo to take the armband after his rousing statements this week, Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has decided that Harry Maguire will remain the club's captain.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Ronaldo urged his Man United teammates to step up their game and secure a top-three finish.
The Portugal captain also claimed that the club's younger players are finding it difficult to accept criticism behind closed doors.
Man United fans were so delighted by Ronaldo's statements that they now want Rangnick to declare him captain on a permanent basis.
Rangnick, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Man United's Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Saturday evening, said: "Right now, I don't see a reason to do that because Harry has been the captain so far and as long as Harry is playing, he will be the captain," according to MEN.
"And if he doesn't play, someone else will have to captain the team." Depending on who is playing, this can differ from game to game.
"We don't only have Cristiano. We have Edinson [Cavani]. We have a few older players, such David de Gea in goal, Victor Lindelof, and Bruno [Fernandes].
"We have enough experienced senior players who can not only be role models in training, on the field, and in games, but also in all those locker room chats or when they are together in the hotel for away games or home games, this has to happen."
"That happens automatically in a team, in a united squad, and all I can do is invite and challenge and remind all the players, including the older players, to do that on a regular basis because it helps even more in a team like ours."
