Pique has responded to reports he earns £450,000 per week by sharing a bank statement on social media. The 34-year-old was one of three players whose salaries were allegedly disclosed by Spanish TV3 show Onze, alongside Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

To refute this, Pique provided a snapshot of his annual salary of £2million.

This means he was paid £4m for the year 2021, or nearly £75,000 per week.

And he made a point about people who tried to uncover his income.

"Characters like this charging for public television to defend their cronies," he tweeted.

"Here is 50% of my December 30th pay." Respect yourself."

Pique's comments follow a statement from Barcelona - whose debts are estimated to be over £1BILLION - addressing player wages.

"In respect to Mr. Llus Canut's manifestations yesterday in the show 'Onze' of TV3, FC Barcelona wishes to clarify the following:

"1. The Club has not disclosed information on certain first team players' pay, and its origin is unknown.

[The information] is inaccurate, does not reflect reality, and in the case of the first three players mentioned, gives set numbers that may never be attained. merit.

"3. It is incorrect to state that the athletes delayed 100% of their salary. Last summer, Messrs. Piqué, Busquets, and Alba gave up a portion of their salaries.

"We think it's inappropriate, unprofessional, and bad faith when this material is supplied as real and true, and we regret that data of this nature is provided that affects the athletes' personal rights and needs, when true, the highest confidentiality."

Due to the club's financial woes, several high-profile players have had to take pay cutbacks.

And after failing to agree on a new deal, Messi left the Nou Camp for free.

They can still sign Man City forward Ferran Torres until players are sold or the pay burden is cut.

In addition to their off-field issues, Barca are failing on the field.

Xavi succeeded Ronald Koeman as manager earlier this season.

But they haven't recovered since, most recently losing in the group stages of the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

They are seventh in LaLiga, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid.
