Elon Musk has once again stirred controversy after criticizing Christopher Nolan’s casting decision for The Odyssey. The billionaire reacted strongly to the news that Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o will portray Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra in Nolan’s upcoming epic film.
The backlash started after conservative commentator Matt Walsh questioned Nyong’o being cast as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” claiming Nolan only made the choice to avoid criticism. Musk responded briefly with “True,” later adding that Nolan “wants the awards,” suggesting the director may be prioritizing diversity and inclusion recognition.
Despite the criticism, Nolan has stood firmly behind his creative vision. In an interview with Time, the acclaimed filmmaker explained that his adaptation remains faithful to Homer’s classic story while also bringing a fresh cinematic perspective. Actor Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, also praised Nolan for respecting the original material.
Meanwhile, TV icon Whoopi Goldberg publicly defended Lupita Nyong’o, reminding critics that the actress is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful women in the world. She also encouraged people to think carefully before judging others based on appearance.
The Odyssey is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 17, 2026, and features a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Elliot Page.
The debate around the film continues to divide fans online, with many defending Nolan’s artistic freedom and celebrating Lupita’s casting.
