"We are experiencing an epidemic in Northern Nigeria," Maryam Shettima complains as her wedding is postponed because the bride's family believes the groom's residence is too posh for her.

Dr. Maryam Shettima, a political and social activist, has expressed her dissatisfaction with classism, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

On Sunday, December 26, the University of East London graduate shared a story on Facebook about a wedding that was just called off because the bride's family felt the property their daughter was moving into didn't match her status and class. The bride's parents offered to buy a 'better' property, according to Ms Shettima, but the groom declined.

The wedding was finally canceled, and the lady went on to marry a socialite who does hardly nothing.

Take a look at her post below:

"In Northern Nigeria, we are dealing with an epidemic of classism, which is often fostered by parents.

A wedding was recently canceled because the bride's family felt the residence she was planned to stay in was inappropriate for her status and class. Wasn't this a nice new terrace house? They stated that they did not want their daughter to suffer since she grew up in luxury!!!

The intended husband is a fine, well-educated man with a good career who comes from an upper-class family; his parents claimed that was all they could afford to house her because the house was given to him by his father.

The bride's parents even promised to find her a more suitable residence. The spouse and his parents, on the other hand, were adamant.

As a result, the wedding was canceled. She went on to marry a socialite who does virtually nothing. She essentially missed out on a wonderful person.

Unfortunately, there are far too many of these stories.

Weddings are canceled because of little details and misguided priorities.

Ironically, the majority of these parents grew up without the goods they now value so highly. They never let their children go through life on their own.

Weddings and marriages have evolved into a competitive sport. It's largely a flamboyant display of wealth, power, materialism, outshining others, and so on; it's no surprise many marriages are short-lived.
