The actress died on Sunday, December 19. She was best known for her role as Truly Scrumptious in the 1968 musical film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
The cause of death is yet unknown.
Her career in film and theater lasted six decades, with her appearance in Brigadoon in 1963 winning her a Tony nomination for best lead actress in a musical.
She also stepped in for Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle in Broadway's My Fair Lady, catapulting her to fame.
But it was her performance as the charming Truly Scrumptious in the children's picture Truly Scrumptious, the aristocratic daughter of a confectionery magnate, in which she co-starred with Dick van Dyke, for which she became famous.
Howes married Richard Adler, a composter, in 1958 and adopted his two kids after their mother died, but the couple later divorced.
She also married Andrew Maree for a short time before marrying literary agent Douglas Rae in 1973.
Before Rae's death in September of this year, they had been married for 48 years.
Following the sad news, fans have paid tribute to Howes, with one fan writing: "RIP to a beautiful person sally ann howes, who passed away last night, you will be missed."
And you'll be remembered for the rest of your life. Our hearts are racing because we love you so much... honestly, we do."
"So sad to learn that Sally Ann Howes (Truly Scrumptious in one of my favorite films, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) has died away," another wrote. Thank you for your memories, and may you rest in peace."
