The new Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur is scheduled to open formally by the end of 2022, succeeding the Shanghai Tower as the world's second-tallest structure at 2,073ft (632m).

The building, which is second in height only to Dubai's Burj Khalifa, has finally achieved its maximum height, and it is indeed a sight to behold, as photographs demonstrate.

The 2,227-foot-tall eka 118 will have an observation deck, a Park Hyatt hotel, and rentable office space.

When the spire is completed, the skyscraper will stand 2,227ft (678.9m) tall, more than double the height of London's Shard, which stands at 1,017ft (310m).

Merdeka 118, an officially designated'megatall' skyscraper, was constructed to overlook a key historical monument in Kuala Lumpur — Stadium Merdeka, the location of the country's 1957 proclamation of independence.

The Australian firm Fender Katsalidis Architects created the sleek exterior of the tower, which is clad in triangular glass panels inspired by 'traditional Malaysian arts and crafts'.
