A new U.S.-led peace plan—one that includes several things Russia wants—is causing concern across Europe. Many European leaders feel the plan could leave Ukraine exposed to future attacks and say it needs to be revised.
During the G20 summit in South Africa, leaders from major European countries, the EU, Japan, and Canada released a joint statement saying they are worried about proposed limits on Ukraine’s military. They warned that such limits could make Ukraine too weak to defend itself and stressed that “borders must not be changed by force.”
President Donald Trump has given Ukraine until Thanksgiving to agree to the 28-point plan. The proposal would give Russia more land than it currently controls, restrict the size of Ukraine’s army, and block Ukraine from ever joining NATO—key demands that Russia has been pushing for.
The U.S. plan does offer a security guarantee similar to NATO’s Article 5, which would mean the U.S. and Europe would defend Ukraine if it’s attacked again. However, the details of this guarantee are still unclear.
Ukrainian and U.S. officials will meet in Switzerland soon to discuss what a future peace deal might look like, according to Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council. President Zelenskyy’s office also confirmed that the talks will take place in the coming days.
