Manchester United are willing to give up their pursuit of Benfica forward Darwin Nunez as they grow worried of a bidding war with Liverpool.
Liverpool are in pole position to sign Nunez, and while Manchester United would love to have him at Old Trafford, they are aware that their pursuit may be futile.
With a slew of issues to address this summer, the Red Devils appear to be willing to skip over this one.
Nunez's most recent transfer
Liverpool are hopeful of landing the emerging Uruguayan star as a striker to replace Sadio Mane, who appears to be on the verge of a move to Bayern Munich.
They've made Nunez a key priority and are willing to spend a club-record sum of around £75 million ($94 million) to get him.
Liverpool are eager to beat any opponent that stands in their way for Nunez after sneaking ahead of Tottenham in January to sign Luis Diaz.
This season, the Benfica forward scored 26 league goals and six European goals, putting him on Manchester United's radar.
Despite appearing to be moving away from Nunez, the Red Devils have told GOAL that striker is still a position they want to address in some fashion in the coming months.
Who will Manchester United turn to for help?
Unlike the Nunez situation, which has quickly soured Manchester United, the Red Devils are planning a long-term pursuit of Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong this summer and have not given up hope of bringing him to Old Trafford.
Indeed, according to GOAL, the club has now formally initiated talks with Barcelona over De Jong, however they are portraying themselves as unafraid to walk away because they have other options.
Kalvin Phillips of Leeds and Declan Rice of West Ham are also being mentioned as prospective targets, however their transfer fees as England players may be exaggerated.
In total, manager Erik ten Hag hopes to make five acquisitions in his first transfer window at the club.
