According to authorities, the Heidelberg dad accused of murdering his three sons has died. A guy from Ratanda, near Heidelberg in Gauteng, has died after being accused of poisoning four of his five children and killing three of them.
Colonel Brenda Muridili announced the death of the 39-year-old man on Sunday.
He'd been in the hospital since last month, when he was discovered comatose at his house, apparently after attempting suicide. His relatives claimed he attempted suicide at the time by ingesting drugs, stabbing his hands and thighs, and slitting his throat.
The dad had apparently given his children energy drinks laced with rat poison some hours before.
Two of the children died at school, one died on the way to the hospital, and one was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. A fifth sibling was said to have turned down the drink.
The toxic substance was also thought to have been given to the household dog, which was later discovered dead.
The man claimed to have told a relative that 'he had no idea what had come over him,' according to the family, who spoke to the media following the occurrence.
"A relative went to see him in the hospital and returned with a report stating that they were able to treat him and that he is now speaking." He apologized profusely and stated that he had no idea what had occurred. "He claims he has no idea what happened to him," the family said in a statement to the media.
The man had been hospitalized and was being escorted by police. He was supposed to be charged with murder and attempted murder.
The youngsters, all of whom were boys, have since been buried.
