After a special cabinet meeting on Thursday, South Africa's curfew was lifted with immediate effect.
However, the risk of Covid-19 infections caused by the Omicron variant remains high, and face masks are still required, with the government urging people to continue following basic health protocols
"Based on the pandemic's trajectory, vaccination levels in the country, and available capacity within the health sector," the cabinet decided to change the alert level to 1 with immediate effect:
The curfew is no longer in effect. As a result, there will be no restrictions on people's hours of movement.
Gatherings are limited to no more than 1,000 people indoors and 2,000 people outdoors.
