The Johannesburg metro police department's (JMPD) internal investigation has been begun after thieves allegedly stole a marked patrol car from officers in Soweto.
According to JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, the incident occurred Sunday evening near Senaoane when three officers stopped to check a complaint of a tent being erected in the middle of the road.
When officers departed the vehicle, Minnaar stated that the suspects jumped inside and drove away.
According to him, the vehicle was later discovered abandoned in Chiawelo.
"The right front and rear wheels, as well as the front bumper, were damaged," he explained.
At Moroka police station, a case of theft and vandalism was opened.
