South Africa is home to close to a million refugees and asylum seekers. World Refugee Day is being celebrated on Monday.
UNCHR representative, Margert Etieno, says they are pleased with the attitude of the SA government towards refugees. "The asylum regime in South Africa is currently one of the best in the world."
Somali national, Zam-Zam Mohammed, says she arrived in South Africa more than a decade ago as a little girl to escape war and conflict in her homeland.
Mohammed says: "The reason I came to SA was to find a safe country so that I can live safely because of a civil war. My country was unstable there was fighting going on and I ended up here in SA to seek a safe country. For 14 years it's not been easy to be accepted even though the government gave us lots of rights. We have been told that we have got all the rights just like any citizen but what we experience from the community we live in it's the opposite."
