Giggs has served as assistant manager since 2013, first under the
guidance of David Moyes, then under his replacement Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman was sacked at the end of the season, with many believing
Giggs would be eventually be appointed to succeed him at the end of his
planned three-year tenure.
But Jose Mourinho was installed instead, and the Portuguese will bring his own coaching team with him to Old Trafford.
Giggs has been offered a different, lesser role with the club –
thought to be with the youth team – but the 42-year-old has rejected it,
and will, according to reports, announce his departure this week. Steve
Bates of the Sunday People writes:
'Some of Giggs' Class of 92 pals are believed to have advised him to leave his United comfort zone and manage in his own right.
'But friends of the thirteen-time Premier League winner, who has
recently split from wife Stacey, believe he is ready to take a break
from the game and wait for the right managerial opening.'
The former winger, who has been with United for 29 years, has been
installed as the favourite to take over at Championship side Nottingham
Forest. He has also been linked with Southampton, Oldham and the England
national team. That's a strange selection.
