Monday marked World Refugee Day and Cornaro says South Africa has much to teach the EU about peaceful co-existence, and reconciliation.
"I think one of the important ways for peaceful co-existence is to disentangle and make a distinction between refugees who still deserve protection. And I think Europe as much as the South Africans are still firmly committed to the international obligations to give any refugee full protection. The issue is how to manage migration and it’s a pity that it’s too often seen. As one, I would like to advocate that we not confuse the discussion, we need to manage migration in the longer term, and South Africa is an interesting partner with which to discuss."
