Simon Shepherd was at home with his wife, Joy, when the incident occurred on Sunday, North Coast Courier reported.
“The intruders kicked down the front door. They first went into the office, then headed to the house to get the key for the safe. They then made their way to the main bedroom,” said the couple’s son, Dave Shepherd.
Their dog started to bark and alerted Joy.
“I walked out to the gate and saw them standing there. I asked what they wanted and they said, ‘mali’ (money). I did not know what to do, so I grabbed a stick and poked them with it through the gate,” she added
Joy said it was not long before they broke the bolts off the gate, entered the house and headed towards the main bedroom.
“I started to scream and my husband heard me. We sleep in separate bedrooms and he came into the hallway thinking that I was in trouble and that these men were there to help me. He did not think that they were intruders until they turned on him and brutally beat him up.”
Joy ran into her room and the intruders followed her. She locked herself in the cupboard and used her cellphone to call for help.
Her husband was beaten with a cane knife and suffered multiple injuries including five broken ribs, a gash to his head and deep cuts. The skin on one of his hands and arm was ripped off.
