Mourinho set to be appointed United manager - latest updates

 Jose Mourinho remains at his London home as he prepares to become Manchester United manager.

The Portuguese was pictured leaving his front door and jumping into a Range Rover on Tuesday morning ahead of meetings with the United board.

Agent Jorge Mendes is set to fly into England to complete the deal so he can officially be named the new boss this week.

Mourinho, wearing a casual grey polo shirt and jeans, again dodged questions from journalists as he made his way from his front door to the waiting car.

He appeared to be clutching onto two notepads and a glasses case, with meetings set to take place later in the day.

An announcement confirming his appointment is expected later on Tuesday evening, but could drag later into the week if negotiations are not finalised on a mega-money deal.

He is expected to take a £15million-a-year deal, which would make him the joint highest paid boss in the world, at a par with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

It has emerged that Mourinho rang his predecessor Louis van Gaal, with whom he worked at Barcelona, himself to admit United had sounded him out about the Old Trafford job.

Mourinho again dodged questions from the press

Mourinho is said to have made the call in the last couple of weeks to preserve his long-standing friendship with Van Gaal , and to ensure there was no ill-feeling when it emerged he was the man United wanted.

Until that point, the 64-year-old had defiantly dismissed the notion that he would be sacked with a year remaining on his contract, believing he would see out his three-year deal.

But Mourinho’s call, confirming United’s approach, left Van Gaal in no doubt he was a dead man walking, even if he secured a top-four spot to ensure Champions League football next season, and won the FA Cup.
