Holiday tan
glowing, a white cape fluttering around her shoulders and glittery
shoes on her feet, Coleen Rooney — the wife of £260,000-a-week
footballer Wayne — should have grabbed all the attention at her 30th
birthday celebration.
But
Coleen had to share the spotlight last weekend with two guests who
managed to eclipse the birthday girl: her mum, Colette McLoughlin, and
her mother-in-law, Jeanette Rooney, who were dolled up to the nines for
the party, held in an upmarket American restaurant in Cheshire.
Colette,
53, wore a £460 white dress by designer Malene Birger, with a £725 gold
clutch bag by Yves Saint Laurent and matching £625 sandals, while
Jeanette, 48, donned a slinky black lace number.

Ever
since Wayne, 30, the Manchester United captain, proposed to Coleen on a
petrol station forecourt in 2003, their mothers have been in the public
eye.
As the couple’s star has risen (along with Wayne’s salary), the lives of Colette and Jeanette have been transformed.
From
lavish shopping trips to glitzy nights out, holidays by private jet and
dramatic makeovers, things couldn’t be more different for the women who
brought up their families on the same council estate in the roughest
part of Liverpool.
But Colette
and Jeanette haven’t always seen eye to eye. In fact, at one of the
families’ earliest meetings — Coleen’s 18th birthday party in 2004 — a
fight between relatives got out of hand and police were called.

IMAGE AWARE
Colette,
like her daughter, has always cared about her appearance and often
accompanies Coleen on trips to Barbara Daley, a chic hair and beauty
salon in Liverpool, where the price of a cut and blow dry starts at £52.
Colette
is rarely seen without full make-up and she and Coleen share that
iconic Liverpudlian beauty staple: luxuriant ‘Scouse brows’.
Jeanette, meanwhile, seems to be less obviously concerned with her image — but don’t let that fool you.

Colette (right) is rarely seen without full make up
After
an unflattering photograph of her on the beach in Mexico in 2003
prompted jibes about her weight, Jeanette shed an incredible 7 st and
overhauled her look.
Her appearance at Coleen’s hen party in 2008, wearing a shimmering turquoise dress, stole the show from the bride-to-be.
At
the time, eminent plastic surgeon Alex Karidis suggested she may have
had a gastric band fitted to have lost so much weight in such a short
space of time.
Indeed,
a Manchester United insider said: ‘It was a remarkable transformation.
People wondered if she’d done more than just change her diet.’
Since then, Jeanette has had her locks cut short and dyed platinum.
DESIGNER TOGS
Colette rules the style stakes — though Jeanette isn’t averse to splashing out on her wardrobe.
Both
own a black quilted Chanel bag (£4,090), which they carry at every
opportunity. Colette alternates hers with other expensive totes,
including a £1,155 black Balenciaga handbag and a £1,590 YSL design from
Harrods.
She
also has an impressive shoe collection, including two pairs of £625
peep-toe Louboutins, in black and nude, which she wears to the races.
Shoppers
at Liverpool’s upmarket boutique Cricket, a favourite of footballers’
wives and local celebrities, and nearby Harvey Nichols often spot
Colette laden with bags after a shopping spree.
But it’s only thanks to her generous daughter that she’s able to indulge.
‘Colette isn’t flashy or showy,’ says a friend.
‘Coleen
gives her clothes as gifts and will bring her to appointments at her
favourite salon — that’s why you always see them there together.’
MARITAL BLISS
Both mothers are happily married: Jeanette to Wayne Snr, her husband of 29 years, and Colette to Tony, whom she married in 1980.
Wayne
Snr is a former boxer who runs a local boxing club, while former
bricklayer Tony is a care worker at children’s hospice Claire House.
Their weddings were modest affairs; nothing compared with Wayne and Coleen’s £5 million A-list nuptials on the Italian Riviera.
Jeanette
Morrey and Wayne Snr were married at Liverpool Register Office after
they found out that Jeanette was pregnant with their second child, son
Graham.
The
low-key ceremony was followed by a reception at a pub, with a buffet of
sausage rolls, sandwiches and chicken in a basket. They couldn’t afford
a honeymoon and spent their wedding night at their three-bedroom
council house with 17-month-old son Wayne.
Seven
years earlier, 18-year-old Colette Frith had married Tony McLoughlin,
21, at a church in the Liverpool docks area, and held their reception at
Tony’s father’s pub.
The pair, strict Catholics who attend church every week, spent their wedding night in a nearby hotel.
Coleen,
born in 1986, was followed by two sons — Joe, 27, and Anthony, 26 — and
the couple then adopted Rosie, their severely disabled daughter, who
died, aged 14, in 2013.
Jeanette has two younger sons — Graham, 28, and John, 25, who are footballers for lower-league teams.
Both sets of parents used to live in two-up, two-down council houses in Croxteth. This one used to be Coleen's mother's house

HOME COMFORTS
Thanks
to the generosity of Wayne and Coleen, their parents have moved from
their former two-up, two-down council houses in Croxteth, the rundown
area of Liverpool where they brought up their families.
Tony
and Colette upsized in 2006 to a £675,000 detached house in an affluent
part of Merseyside, complete with four en-suite bedrooms, four
reception rooms, in-built CCTV and electronic gates.
Colette
is well known to her neighbours there, who describe her as ‘down to
earth’. ‘She’s really glam, and every time I’ve seen her she has looked
lovely,’ one neighbour told the Mail. ‘She really takes care of her
appearance.
‘My husband spoke to her not long ago and she managed to get his football shirt signed by Wayne.’
Jeanette
lives in West Derby in a detached house that was bought by Wayne for
£450,000. Less opulent than the McLoughlins’ home, it has three
reception rooms, two bathrooms and a pretty garden.
A
neighbour told the Mail: ‘Jeanette is a very private person, but she’s
ever so friendly. I don’t think she’s let Wayne’s success go to her
head.’
WORKING WOMEN
Jeanette is a dinner lady at the De La Salle Academy in Liverpool, the school attended by her three sons and Coleen.
She’s
had the same job since before Wayne was famous, and vowed in 2004 never
to give up work, despite her son’s wealth, because she loved it so
much.
She
was briefly signed off on sick leave a year later, after revelations
about Wayne’s liaisons with prostitutes caused her to suffer stress, but
was soon back in the dining hall, where she remains today.
Colette,
a former nursery nurse, gave up work to care for disabled daughter
Rosie and now spends much of her time looking after her grandsons, Kai,
Klay and Kit.
Colette
is a director of Speed 9849, the business that handles Coleen’s
clothing and jewellery ranges. With her mother at the helm, Coleen made
£690,000 last year, according to Companies House.

EXOTIC HOLIDAYS
There’s nothing Coleen and Wayne like more than jetting off on holiday — and where they go, Colette usually goes, too.
Cyprus, Portugal, Barbados and Dubai are just some of the idyllic destinations the family have flown to in recent months.
If
nothing else, Colette and Tony are needed to help carry the bags —
Coleen has been known to bring 18 suitcases for a single trip.
Wayne
and Coleen own a £5 million holiday home on the Caribbean island of
Barbados. It boasts an infinity pool and six bedrooms, so there’s more
than enough room for Colette to stay, too.
Elsewhere,
however, it’s pricier to bring your mum: another favourite of the
Rooneys, the five-star Conrad Hotel in the Algarve has lavish suites at
£1,200 a night.
Luckily, Jeanette doesn’t seem as interested in going abroad with her wealthy son and his family.
A
source explains: ‘It may be that those photographs in Mexico put her
off, but she’s not interested in being followed by photographers trying
to get a picture of her in a bikini.’

PARTY ANIMALS
Jeanette
is the more private of the two. She’s admitted she often cries when her
son triumphs on the pitch, which may explain her desire to keep a low
profile, even when attending his matches.
Colette, often spotted on girls’ nights out with her daughter, is quite the opposite.
A
family friend told the Mail that Colette is a regular on Cheshire’s
social scene: ‘She really enjoys the big posh dinners, especially the
ones for charity.’
She’s also a fan of awards ceremonies, frequently escorting her daughter when Wayne can’t make it.
A
guest at the 2010 Pride of Britain awards remembers: ‘Coleen was quite
cool, but her mum seemed very pleased to be around so many celebrities.
She seemed to be in her element and was schmoozing everyone in the
room.’
Colette enjoys a drink but knows her limits, while Jeanette has been known to over-indulge.
At
Coleen’s 18th birthday party in 2004, at the swish Devonshire House
Hotel in Liverpool, guests described her as ‘rolling drunk’ by 8.30pm.
‘She
was dancing with one of the players and had her hands all over him,’
one witness said. ‘It was all in good fun. But if it had been my mum I’d
have been horribly embarrassed. All three of her boys told her to stop
drinking.’
Later on, Jeanette was said to have tried to stop Colette from wading into a row between members of the two wider families.
While
it is not known what sparked it, Colette was heard yelling: ‘You’ve
ruined my daughter’s night. Your family have caused this.’

more than jetting off on holiday — and where they go, Colette usually
goes, too. Pictured: Coleen watches from the shoreline as eldest son Kai

FAMILY MATTERS
While Wayne and Coleen have a good relationship with Jeanette, it’s fair to say they have a far closer bond with Colette.
Neighbours
in Croxteth say this was apparent several years ago, when the young
couple would spend far more time with the McLoughlins than the Rooneys.
Colette
helped her daughter through the 2010 saga, when Wayne’s indiscretions
with a £1,200-a-night prostitute were exposed by a red-top newspaper.
While
Tony McLoughlin allegedly wanted his daughter to leave her superstar
husband, it was Colette who encouraged her to work through their
problems.
Coleen
takes her children to her parents’ home every Saturday afternoon, and
on Sundays Colette can be found at her daughter’s house, cooking a roast
in the Rooneys’ £150,000 kitchen. When Wayne is away training or at a
match, the two women spend their evenings together watching TV.
Though Coleen gets on well with Jeanette, her relationship with her mother-in-law isn’t exactly chummy.
‘There’s no antipathy — they’re just not as close,’ a source says.
