The Material Girl may have finally begun dressing for her age ahead of her 56th birthday next week.

Madonna wasn't her usual provocative self in Cannes on Thursday and looked more granny than Grammy-winner.

The singer was clad in a bizarre covered-up outfit of black-and-white mismatched patterns as she boarded the family yacht.

Madonna wore a below-the-knee floral skirt with demure lace trim, paired with a long-sleeved Adidas jacket in polka-dots with stripes down the arms.

The pop star finished off her look with a floppy, check-printed hat, a paisley-patterned tote bag and white golfing shoes.

Perhaps strangest of all, Madonna wore fingerless black leather gloves by Chanel, perhaps to protect her hands from ageing UV rays, or as a gesture towards the fingerless glove trend she started back in the 80s.

The covered-up look is a drastic change from Madonna's Instagram picture earlier this week.

The True Blue singer posted a picture of her lower half clad in only skimpy black lace underwear with the caption, 'Getting ready for my B-day!'

Referring to the floral clothes hanging behind her in the bathroom, she added, 'Yes we hang our dresses in the bathtub! Thanks D&G!'

There seems to be plenty of cause for celebration in the singer's life, as she's currently enjoying a luxury getaway with her new toy boy Timor Steffens, 26, along with her son Rocco, 13, and daughter Lourdes, 17, following Lourdes’ high school graduation.

The teenager also embraced the resurgence of 90s trends with a black elastic choker necklace.

It seems Madonna's children are enjoying the company of their mother's closer-in-age boyfriend.

Meanwhile the singer is currently preparing to release her much-anticipated thirteenth studio album, rumored to be called 'Rebel Heart'.
