South African musician shot by police in Midrand

Johannesburg - An award-winning South African musician is recovering at home after he was shot and wounded by police in Midrand in the early hours of Monday morning.

Hip hop artist Khuli Chana was apparently on his way home from a gig when an unmarked car started following him. Six shots were fired at his vehicle, entertainer Melanie Bala tweeted.

Police allegedly mistook Chana for a wanted criminal who was driving a similar car, Eyewitness News reported.

The musician was shot in the finger and has some shrapnel in his back, according to his manager Refiloe Ramogase.

Chana has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at his home.

Ramogase told eNCA that Chana's vehicle was driving "at 40km/h" and that police had "ample time" to stop it.

The artist’s manager said that they would be pressing charges of attempted murder later on Monday.
