The debate over the interest of former Super Eagles gaffer, Samson Siasia, between the Flying Eagles and Dream Team vacant job, seems to have been laid to rest, as the former Nigerian international has opted to handle the Olympics team ahead of Flying Eagles.
World Cup Coach (WCC), as Siasia is fondly called told SoccerStar in Abuja early this week that having handled the Flying Eagles on two instances, he would prefer the bigger challenge of coaching the Dream Team, admitting that he was ready for the job.
Asked if he still have interest in coaching the national team, Siasia replied: “The truth of the matter is that nobody has called or contacted me concerning taking over the team. So, I’m just a sitting duck but I’m all eyes in case they want us to talk.
“You ask why did I apply, but I have read or hear anything about the federation requesting for applications for the job. The last thing I read about the chief coach of the Dream Team was that they said they are going to give it to Fatai Amao, though it has not been made official. Honestly, I really don’t know what is going on,” he noted.
On his best choice between Flying Eagles and Dream Team, Siasia said: “Since I have handled U-20 Flying Eagles twice, I think the Olympic team would be better for me. If I’m in position to decide where I will go, I will certainly prefer the Dream Team.”
What are his fears over Super Eagles picking the World Cup ticket, he emphatically noted: “I don’t think we have any reason to entertain any fear. The trend has been the destruction of almost every team and moving to the next round. It however boils down to preparation for the next games. We all know that Nigerians are more interested in the World Cup than even the Nations Cup trophy.
“Qualifying for the World Cup gives a team, the chance to win the tournament. No team can dream of winning it if it did not qualify first. The ticket is very important and Keshi knows what is at stake. He must get all his soldiers together and start working on them, starting with the Mandela Challenge. He must ginger the players and let them know that he is there for them so that he can make them play for him.
“He must interact with them to know them more intimately. He must show concern to some of them nursing injury. I’m sure that when he takes care of all these, the boys would come out smoking to play like wounded lions. The federation should also work with him and the issue of the slash in match bonuses should not even come out at all. Everybody must be focused because picking the ticket is a mission possible. We must plan well but the problem is that we hardly can plan,” he quipped.
