ANC retains 15 wards in by-elections

Johannesburg - The ANC retained 15 wards and lost two in 20 municipal by-elections across the country, according to the preliminary results on the Independent Electoral Commission's website on Thursday.

The two wards that were lost, were won by an independent candidate in Mahikeng in North West, and the Democratic Alliance in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

The DA also retained three wards in the Western Cape.

The by-elections were held in the North West, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape on Wednesday.

In the Western Cape, the Democratic Alliance won four of the seven by-elections. In Oudtshoorn, the DA won with 54.16%, taking the ward from the ANC.

In the North West, the ANC lost the Mahikeng ward to an independent candidate who secured 49.21% of the votes.

The ANC retained the Inxuba Yethemba and Engcobo wards in the Eastern Cape, Maphumulo in KwaZulu-Natal, Albert Luthuli in Mpumalanga, Rustenburg, Ratlou, Mahikeng, Ditsobotla, Ganyesa, two wards in Ramotshere Moiloa and Tlokwe wards in the North West.

The governing party also obtained Bitou and two other wards in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

While the DA obtained wards in Bergrivier, Overstrand, George and the ward in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.
