Yet Murphy can only be pleased with the outcome - even though he made a well-received appearance in the pilot, he was not cast to lead the show.
It also stands to be seen whether a new film will drum up the same financial succcess enjoyed by the first three Beverly Hills Cop pics, which were directed by Martin Brest, Tony Scott and John Landis, respectively.
Paramount is also figuring out what to do with its planned sequel to 1986's Top Gun, which was to be directed by Scott but has been on hold since his high-profile suicide.
Perhaps in a trend of stars revisiting retro hits, Tom Cruise was slated to star in that sequel.
The production schedule Beverly Hills Cop 4 is equally unclear, but trilogy fans will no doubt be chomping at the bit to hear that unmistakably catchy theme song one more time.
